The Color of Science and The Science of Style

The Color of Science and The Science of Style

Dr. BertleyImagine addressing both of these topics in the same interview! Hope students did just that as they met with Dr. Frederic M. Bertley, Senior Vice-President for Science and Education at The Franklin Institute. Six students from sixth, seventh, and eighth grade worked during seven of their lunch periods to prepare for this important interview which will be featured in this year’s Leading Healthy Change in Our Communities 2016, an annual publication of Healthy Newsworks, one of Hope’s valued partnerships.

Dr. Bertley, an immunologist, amazed the students by talking about his initial interest in science and about his HIV research in Haiti and Sudan while studying at Harvard. Dr. Bertley finds great joy in sharing his science expertise with others, so the opportunity to move to the Franklin Institute and create programs like The Color of Science, featuring persons of color whose scientific breakthroughs are often underrepresented, was a natural move for him. You’ll need to buy Boyd’s magazine to learn more about The Science of Style where Dr. Bertley is featured.
