5th Grade

Fifth grade is the first experience students have with Hope Partnership School. In this formative year, Mrs. Maureen Oblea focuses on building a community and family atmosphere in the classroom.

Mrs. Oblea tries her best to teach to the heart of her students. After 27 years of teaching, 15 of those years at Hope, reflection and evaluation help drive her instruction. She strives to make her classroom and academics engaging, uplifting and inspiring.

She has developed many activities that work to strengthen her students’ character and build their confidence. Those techniques to facilitate learning and academic success are paramount to the fifth grade experience. They include: the hopeful tree, freedom quilts, personal and family totem poles, identity heart maps, research projects and essay writing, The “WOW” board to celebrate “fabulous” behavior and numerous lessons with an emphasis on social-emotional learning.

Every year, she implements many engaging and educational lessons- mindful movement, brain breaks, interactive book reports, real life projects, fun reward incentives, Adopt a Cow program, Need in Deed service-learning program, field trips to various Philadelphia historic sights- Magic Gardens, The Liberty Museum and Fairhill Burial Grounds.

Mrs. Oblea focuses her curricula on the EL Education program for Language Arts, common core state standards, meaningful discussions, group work, and project-based learning. She places a focus on social justice and critical thinking skills. It is important to her that her students become caring and concerned citizens. She believes her role as a teacher is to inspire Hope’s Core Values and develop a passion for lifelong learning in her students.
